How PEERCONNEX started...
Barrie Ontario, a city known for its charm and vibrant community, has unfortunately not been immune to the significant increase in addiction and mental health issues seen over the past years across Canada. The once-thriving heart of the city has become a microcosm of the larger crisis unfolding across the country.
Substance abuse, including opioids, cocaine, and alcohol, has plagued the lives of many residents, causing devastating consequences for individuals and their families and increasing homelessness. Moreover, mental health struggles, such as depression, anxiety, and PTSD, have become alarmingly prevalent, leaving a profound impact on the overall well-being of the community. This rise in addiction and mental health challenges has created an urgent need for comprehensive support, awareness programs, and accessibility to resources to help people overcome these hurdles and find their paths to recovery.
Three individuals whose lives intersected in a remarkable way, came together in 2022 to build awareness, educate, provide resources, and effectively change the way addiction and mental health are perceived in our community. Ryan, Charity, and Devon had all faced their own battles with addiction, but through perseverance and determination, had managed to rise above the challenges. They returned to school to complete a Mental Health, Interprofessional Practice Graduate program (Ryan, Charity) and an Addictions Treatment and Prevention Program (Devon).
Ryan and Charity established the foundation for PeerConnex during their time at school. PeerConnex is now their visionary company that aims to provide support, awareness programs, and increased accessibility and use of resources to help men struggling with addiction and mental health issues. Devon shared similar aspirations and soon became a close friend and invaluable addition to the PeerConnex team. Their personal experiences fueled their desire to make a difference in the lives of others who were going through similar challenges.
“In Canada, addiction and mental health problems are prevalent issues that affect countless individuals. Canada is experiencing an opioid crisis, with the number of deaths attributed to opioids on the rise. According to recent statistics, approximately 17,000 deaths in Canada were linked to opioid-related poisonings between January 2016 and 2022. This staggering figure highlights the urgent need for comprehensive support, awareness programs, and accessibility resources to help people overcome their challenges.”
Furthermore, mental health issues are also having a significant impact on Canadians’ well-being.
“Around one in five Canadians experienced a mental health or addiction problem with 70% of mental health problems and illnesses developing during adolescence or young adulthood. Barrie mirrors these national trends, facing its own challenges in providing accessible mental health services to people living in the community.”
In Barrie, the statistics are sobering. The city is grappling with an increase in substance abuse, particularly among men. Alcoholism affects a significant portion of the male population. Studies show that approximately 4.8% of Canadian men met the criteria for alcohol dependence, highlighting the need for targeted support and interventions,
Ryan, Charity, and Devon are acutely aware of these statistics, which serve as a constant reminder of the magnitude of their mission. They know that by sharing their stories and fostering connections they can create a positive impact in the community and beyond.
As PeerConnex continues to grow, Ryan, Charity, and Devon are committed to the idea that “love and connection” are the driving forces of recovery. They certify that these resources are freely available to all, waiting to be discovered by those who are open to embracing it. PeerConnex is a beacon of hope, providing opportunities for individuals to share their stories, find solace in community, and embark on a journey of healing and recovery.
Welcome to PeerConnex where “love is always free, and connection is the key”.
